The Centre of Substance use and Addiction Research (CESAR) is a collective of researchers and clinicians investigating the risk and resilience factors associated with substance use and addiction. 

Substance use and addiction represent significant societal challenges globally. Key questions revolve around understanding why and how individuals become addicted and how we can effectively treat or (preferably) prevent addiction. Therefore, CESAR focuses on identifying the risk and resilience factors associated with (problematic) substance use and addiction.

We investigate the intricate interplay between brain structure and function, behaviour, and the environment, spanning from molecular mechanisms to societal factors. Substance use and addiction detrimentally impact individuals’ social, physical and psychological well-being. The knowledge gained from our research can eventually  contribute to effective prevention and treatment strategies for addiction.

For our addiction treatment research, we have a close, formal partnership with the Ready for Change clinic in Rotterdam. This collaboration brings academia and clinical practice closer together: by linking scientific insights directly to everyday care, we work jointly toward more effective treatments and better outcomes for patients.
